The Ride
Wheels4Life
Imagine being able to change someone’s life and give them back their mobility? It is actually possible… The “Wheels 4 Life” project plans to cycle from Johannesburg to Sun City in 1 day in order to raise money to buy wheelchairs for 5 physically disabled children from the Hope School. We will ride with Tendai Khumalo, who is a paraplegic, and who will be riding on his hand cycle! The event will take place on Wednesday, 9 December 2009.
Tendai is also extending his hand out to all the other paraplegics to come and have fun with us, meanwhile changing people lives and their attitudes towards all forms of disabilities. We are privileged to have Paralympics bronze medallist, Gavin Kilpatrick, riding as a part of our team. Gavin is visually impaired.

A note from Tendai….
“I have always preferred contact sports – Rugby, Basketball etc. I had never imagined myself cycling let alone hand-cycling. It took extreme circumstances for me to realise my new passion- Hand cycling. What makes this even fulfilling is the fact that ever since I found my “love”, I have touched and changed many people lives along the way both able and disabled. I have met the most amazing people who are willing to give their all without any expectations.
Why am I not playing any contact sport; I will tell you why…
Three 94.7 cycle challenges ago my best friend had a nasty accident at Douglasdale just before she turned into Witkoppen. She was so badly bruised that I went to see her at Morningside Clinic, I pretended to be strong for her by bedside, but I bawled my eyes out when I was alone in my car. I promised her that I would ride with her the next 94.7 challenge…and so I did. As painful as it was, it was the most exhilarating experience ever and I got hooked.
I have taken part in numerous races and with the team we have managed to raise some money to buy some wheelchairs which we have donated to some folks who really needed them. The impact and feeling this had in these peoples’ lives is unexplainable, but one can easily get used to it. I am!! I feel obliged and commissioned to ensure that year on year with the team we do all we can with our sponsors to raise money and buy as many wheelchairs and accessories to make other people’s lives better.
I am also extending my hand out to all the other paraplegics to come and have fun with us, meanwhile changing people lives and their attitudes towards all forms of disabilities.
Lets make rolling in our wheelchairs as cool as driving an Aston Martin DB9 “
